Partner, Allens Arthur RobinsonIan's legal skills and expertise in pay TV, telecommunications, television, radio, newsprint and interactive media are such that his clients regard him as a 'one-stop shop' for corporate, commercial, regulatory and strategic advice.
He advises on joint ventures, alliances, acquisitions and divestments, access regimes and regulation of most sectors of the information and communication economy. His particular expertise is ownership and control and structural regulation of the converged media and telecommunications industries.
Ian's strong interpersonal skills and accessibility attract high-profile media and telecommunications clients.
He has a long association with News Limited and acted on the establishment of FOXTEL.
He currently represents Fox Interactive Media, MySpace, Inc, Telecom Corporation of New Zealand Limited, AAPT Limited, AOL LLC, the Special Broadcasting Service, National Indigenous TV Limited, Sky Channel Pty Limited and Hutchison Telecommunications (Australia) Limited.
Significant matters include acting for the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games in negotiating and executing the US television rights contract with NBC and the Australian television rights contract with the Seven Network. He also acted on the establishment of the Australian Radio Network, the reconstruction of the Ten Television Network (for Westpac) and acted for the Australian Government on the regulatory aspects of the Scoping Study for the privatisation of Telstra Corporation Limited. He represented the commercial television stations plaintiffs in Australian Capital Television v The Commonwealth: a landmark High Court case that established the implied constitutional guarantee of freedom of political speech.
Ian was Deputy Managing Partner and Managing Partner at the firm from 1997 to 1 July 2001. From 1 July 2001 to 31 December 2003 Ian was Senior Executive Partner, Integration and Client Services.
