Reg Coutts

Managing Director, Coutts Communications

Reg Coutts is now in his fourth career as a specialist adviser through his own company Coutts Communications Pty Ltd (www.couttscommunications.com) providing advice to government and industry both in Australia and overseas.  Reg left the University of Adelaide at the end of 2003 as Emeritus Professor and besides the business still supervises graduate students and is working on commercialising a number of new ideas.

In 1993 Dr Coutts was appointed to the Chair in Telecommunications at the University of Adelaide, building a new industry sponsored Centre for Telecommunications Information Networking (CTIN) and developing expertise in telecommunications in a number of areas in the university.  During this time Reg played a key role in growing other new ventures involving the University such as m.Net, AITEC, and ECIC. It should be noted that m.Net (www.mnetcorporation.com.au) is focused on developing innovative new content / applications for 3G.  With the ICT industry demise CTIN was closed in 2002 but much of the expertise developed continues within the university in the Convergence Research Group and the Centre for Internet Research.

Before joining the University, Reg spent 17 developmental years in Telstra from 1976 till 1993.  He spent 12 fun years in the Telecom Research laboratories in the transmission technology area where Reg was involved in digital microwave systems and the early development of Telecom’s infamous DRCS system.  Recognising it was time for a change, Reg was invited to fill a key executive role as National Manager, Strategy and Business Development in the newly formed mobiles business in 1988 at the dawn of network competition in Australia.  In this role Reg was responsible for the technology strategy including R&D investment and commercialisation as well as the regulatory strategy for the business.
