Malcolm CollessDirector, Colless ConsultingMalcolm is Director of Colless Consulting. He is a freelance journalist specialising in political affairs, communications issues and the media generally. In his early career Malcolm worked as a journalist for The Daily Mirror and The Times in London. He returned to Australia in 1972, became the paper's industrial editor until 1977 when he was appointed it's chief political correspondent in Canberra. In 1981, he moved into management, as general manager of the News Ltd owned Tamworth Newspaper Co Ltd, publisher of the Northern Daily Leader. He then held executive posts with The News in Adelaide and Channel Ten in Sydney. In 1985 he set up The Australian Newspaper's first bureau in Beijing. In 1987, following News' takeover of the Herald and weekly Times he was appointed managing director of News Ltd's suburban newspapers around Australia. In December 1988 he was appointed chief executive of the Herald and Weekly Times in Melbourne and over the next three years launched the Herald Sun and the Sunday Herald Sun. Malcolm returned to Sydney in 1991 as group director of corporate development and joined the board of News Ltd - a position he held until his retirement in 2007. During that time he was part of the team that established an on-line joint-venture between News Limited and The People’s Daily in Beijing. He played a leading role in the establishment of pay-TV in Australia and the transition to online platforms through News Interactive, the forerunner to News Digital Media.
